The company was founded by Hermann and Dr. Ernst Mahle in 1920. Today, 99.9 percent of the shares are owned by the MAHLE Foundation, which does not have voting rights. This guarantees that the group remains independent. Every year, the MAHLE Foundation receives a moderate yet stable distribution of profits, which it uses to support projects in the areas of health care and nursing, agriculture and nutrition, education and training, as well as the arts and culture.

MAHLE Technologies Holding (China) Co., Ltd (a.k.a MTC) was established in Shanghai in April, 2006, providing services in the areas of R&D, sales, purchasing, finance, IT, HR as well as communications to other MAHLE operations in China as the regional headquarters and the technical center. Having been expanded twice in 2012 and 2014 respectively, MTC now boasts a total area of over 65,000 m2, including a number of state-of-the-art labs and test benches, a production site of over 15,000 m2, and offices that can seat 800 employees.
